Summer is Here!
Welcome to my Summer newsletter hope you are enjoying a sunny July and August where you live. we have been enjoying mostly sunny warm weather here on Vancouver Island B.C. and trying to take off as much time as possible to soak it in and store up some Vitamin Ds to get us through another long winter.
Astronaut News
Some of you may have heard that I have been commissioned by the Canadian Space Agency to create another patch for Astronaut Bob Thirsk. This is patch number 3 and the second solo design for Bob`s personal Canadian representation.
Dr. Thirsk will be spending 4 months on the Space Station running the amazing Candarm mechanism and doing other scientific research at zero gravity. You can find out more by going to the Ca. Space Agency website.
Tigh Na Mara Resort
At the beginning of May 2008 I started my art presentation at the beautiful Tigh Na Mara Resort and Spa in Parksville. I am showing a full variety of my paintings, limited edition prints and jewelry in the Pine Boutique located beside the lobby entrance. I will be accepting appointments by private booking until October 08 when we will be opening our new `House of Helin native art, jewelry and design showroom in downtown Parksville.

This location will focus on high end paintings, prints, jewelry and my designing services.
Mainly a book by appointment showroom and video lounge I will meet with clients interested in wedding rings and wedding services; interior and exterior design consultations and other native art and design services.

Advice for the Summer Lovers
Wear sunscreen and be careful about other outdoor activities, mainly the private fun because there is so much video technology out there now that everyone can capture private moments and then within minutes download the footage onto U Tube type internet broadcasts for the whole world to see. There is nothing you can do about it and unless you want to be famous for those kinds of invasions of privacy poporotzy moments, you need to be very careful about getting burned from both sources when the summer heat draws you out and your clothes off.

Well friends as time slips by us so quickly it is nice to know that we can keep records of goings on, so easily. The technology of the digital age makes it so convenient that we sometimes get too lost in that world, and then time is zipping by very quiclky.
Fortunately a wedding experience isn`t like that when we look at all the plans and preparations for the big day.
But then boom! it`s gone and the debt and exhaustion leave us in stressful shock for months and sometimes years, depending on whether the parents helped flip most of the bill or not.
Best advice is good planning and low expectations of the perfect day. Remember the day is all about you and your soul mate, and the beautiful pictures and videos to visually remember it all.
My wife and I had some challenges with our photographer and our videographer, which to this day reminds us of the back up plan for such a big disappointment.
Have 2 of each doing the visuals and then you have a back up plan if it doesn`t work out with the so called professionals.
Lot`s of deep breathing and water will help too.
Oh the facts are that people who elope and avoid the big diamonds and big weddings stay married longer.
Remember that kids change everything, from a mans point of view and no matter what kind of power your love has you can`t change the other person. They will always be like their parents in one way or another.

My good friends and clients Amy and Lionel Heinrich are celebrating their 50th Anniversay and Lionel commissioned me to do a 1 1/4" wide 18k gold bracelet for his wife.
I video taped the whole process and sent it off to them as an anniversary gift.

Greetings to you and yes it has been a long time since I wrote a newsletter, please forgive me.
Time has passed so quickly and I can`t help but say "where did the time go??" I wish it would slow down just a little bit. I was wondering whether it had anything to do with being so technologically distracted. Have you thought about that? We have so many high tech shows and tools and toys that even the time it takes to learn how to use them or fix them can consume huge amounts of precious time. I think it cuts into our true progress as human beings.
I have spent so many hours advancing my career with computers and new art tools and projects that I sometimes feel very guilty wondering whether it`s all really worth the extra time for the learning curve.

I am still working on my new jewelry book which is looking real good, and my wife Sue is doing the tedious job of editing it for Karin at Raven Publishing.
CALVIN HELIN BOOK
I am now working on my cousin Calvin Helin`s second book with him on some very exciting characters, which will be be spoken more of in the near future.
SPACE ART
Last week I was notified that I will be commissioned by the Canadian Space Agency to do yet another patch for Bob Thirsk`s uniform for his next mission up to the Space Station for over 4 months. It is a great honor to work with Bob again as I feel he is truly one of the greatest role models of all time.
BOB THIRSK VISIT
Bob will be visiting me at the Tigh Na Mara Resort in Parksville on May 12. If you want to meet Bob please contact me or visit the resort around 11 am.
SIMON THE SPIRIT BEAR
The other exciting news is yesterday we brought Simon the Spirit Bear home from Vancouver to live with us. Simon was one of the bear sculptures that I created for the auction in Vancouver to raise money for the B.C. Lions Foundation for Kids. He was graciously sold back to us by the fellow who bought him as he felt we were going to be able to use Simon for our presentations. All these presentations are going to raise awareness about endangered kermode bears and wild salmon.
Please do your best to help all endangered species and be good to Mother Earth and yourself. You are worth it.

WHO IS SIMON?
Simon is the 7 foot tall Spirit Bear sculpture that I made for the
B.C. Lions Foundation and the Canucks for Kids auction in Vancouver last year.
So much work went into him and it was tough to see him go but with the blessings of our creator Simon was offered back to us by the people that purchased him.
They were aware of our cause to help protect the SBs home land from the greedy logging companies, and felt that he would be of greater importance if he were helping us get the word out to the world, about this rare sub species of the black kermode bear of the central west coast.
Thanks to Stephan for his generosity and heart for endangered species.

My jewelry book is still in the works with a few set backs. I hope it will be ready for print by the end of the summer.
It is titled `Raven`s Shiny Treasures` and will feature everything you ever wanted to know about Tsimshian indian jewelry and design; how to make, how to buy, how to be creative and lots of great tips, pictures and humor( but of course, I`m a Raven don`t you know).
I will also feature a foreward by my long time friend and curator at the B.C. museum of anthropology, Bill McLennan. Bill inspired and shared the true Tsimshian style of designing with me from his extensive travels and research.
Also very helpful was his colleague Karen Duffeck. Two very wonderful and special people. Thank you both for your passion for my Tsimshian culture and arts.
I will also have a section in my book on wedding rings and the Language of Love, which will also be published in a smaller booklet. This concept is based on my research and understanding of our traditional designs and the transformational and spiritual background of the mysterious and beautiful Life crest designs.
